Manager of Public Affairs
Kara Kong is a Manager of Public Affairs at Southwest Strategies. She has more than 11 years of experience in strategic communications, community outreach and government relations. She primarily supports the firm by overseeing public outreach programs for transportation clients such as SANDAG and Caltrans. Her responsibilities include strategic program and message development, coordinating communication collaterals and building critical relationships with community stakeholders.
Kong began her career at a Sacramento-based public affairs firm, aiding the success of dozens of statewide ballot initiative campaigns and varied regulatory campaigns. Since moving back to San Diego, she has supported SANDAG and Caltrans at two private firms in similar but different capacities – communications and transportation planning – developing a niche for transportation issues, infrastructure development and construction outreach. Kong has also worked on a variety of land use, utility and civic engagement projects.
Prior to joining Southwest Strategies, Kong spent five years leading the community and government relations program for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, an international road race series that has a presence in more than eight countries worldwide. Kong led a team of event and communications in executing an industry leading community outreach and engagement program.
Kong holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish from the University of California, Davis.
Born and raised in North County, Kong convinced her Central Valley then-boyfriend, now husband, to move to San Diego. They and their two young boys now live in the La Costa area of Carlsbad. Increasingly, her spare time is filled up with t-ball games and swim classes, though she does try to get in a run here and there.Back To Our People
