Southwest Strategies Welcomes Two New Hires in San Diego

Leading public affairs firm strengthens team with new additions

SAN DIEGO, CA (December 20, 2017) –– Southwest Strategies, one of California’s leading public affairs and public outreach firms, is pleased to announce that two new employees have joined the company’s growing team – Manager of Public Affairs Kara Kong and Account Executive Olivia Chivers.

Kara Kong joins Southwest Strategies as a Manager of Public Affairs. She brings more than 11 years of experience in strategic communications, community outreach and government relations. She will support the firm by overseeing large-scale public outreach programs.

Kong began her career at a Sacramento-based public affairs firm, aiding the success of dozens of state-wide ballot initiative campaigns and varied regulatory campaigns. A San Diego County native, Kong has supported SANDAG and Caltrans in a consultant capacity on a variety of transportation, infrastructure and construction outreach issues.

Prior to joining Southwest Strategies, Kong spent five years leading the community and government relations program for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, an international road race series that started in San Diego and now has a presence in six countries worldwide. Kong led a team of event communication professionals in developing and executing an industry-leading community outreach program.

Her experience working closely with the community and vast knowledge of major infrastructure, construction and outreach strategies make her a strong addition to our team,” said President Chris Wahl.

New Account Executive Olivia Chivers brings her superior writing skills to the Southwest Strategies team. Prior to joining the firm, Chivers worked as a freelance writer developing creative and captivating content for a variety of clients. She has experience with traditional copywriting and editing, as well as content creation for social media and the web. Additionally, Chivers was a contributing writer for her university newspaper while attending Arkansas Tech University.

“The ability to write is a key attribute in our industry,” said Wahl. “Olivia’s writing skills and her ability to adapt her writing to the requirements of the project at hand will make a great addition to our team.”

Chivers graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from Bellevue University.
